About Plymouth
Plymouth is located in Jackson County on the south bank of the Wabash River. The city was founded in 1814 and was named Plymouth, England. It had a population of 22,884 as of the 2010 census. The city is home to Purdue University and is the commercial center of eastern Jackson County. Plymouth is also a major transportation hub, with Interstate 65 running through the middle of town.
The city’s history is rich and diverse. The first settlers in the area were Shawnee Indians, who built a settlement near what is now known as Pioneer Park. The area soon became known as Jackson Prairie and was used for farming and trading.
In 1810, Colonel James Posey led a group of settlers from Kentucky to this area in search of new land. They first settled along the Wabash River, but when that location proved too swampy, they moved upstream to what is now downtown Plymouth. In 1814, they founded Plymouth City on land that was purchased from the Indians. At first, it consisted of just a few buildings: a general store, a tavern, and a sawmill operated by Captain John Hays. The first school in Plymouth opened in 1816.
